Villanova deflates undefeated Texas behind Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Justin Moore

The Villanova men’s basketball team made sure Philly got at least one solid road performance on Sunday.

Hours before the Eagles made the day a nightmare at 4:25 the Wildcats bested the Texas Longhorns, 68-64, led by Jeremiah Robinson-Earls and Justin Moore who both scored 19 points. Villanova also got a nice bump from Collin Gillespie who chipped in 12 points and three assists and sank four free throws to ice the game in the final minute.

The game was tightly contested throughout as the largest lead belonged to Villanova at just eight around the 15-minute mark in the 2nd half. As the game wound down Courtney Ramey hit a deep three for Texas to knot the game at 57-57. Cole Swider answered for Villanova with a three of his own with 1:58 remaining. With 57 seconds left Ramey hit another three to make it a two-point game but Jermaine Samuels answered with a blow by layup off a kickout from Robinson-Earl bumping their lead back to four. Kai Jones rimmed out a free throw trying to convert a three-point-play and it turned out to be the killer as Gillespie went four-for-four from the line to ice the game even after a reverse layup from Coleman to make it a one-possession game with under 30 seconds.

Texas was led by Ramey and Matt Coleman each putting 17 points on the board and freshman Greg Brown contributed seven points and six boards. Guard Andrew Jones struggled throughout the day going 2 for 10 with 5 points and a mere 1 for 6 from three. His longer start to the season continues as he’s only shot 33% this year and an ugly 22% from beyond the arc.

Villanova (4-1) has now won two straight since an overtime loss to Virginia Tech and look to keep it rolling in a Big East showdown with Georgetown on Friday. Texas (4-1) will look to bounce back against Texas State Wednesday before a showdown at No. 2 Baylor on Sunday.
